President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to take greater responsibility for tackling Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, saying his administration must now focus more directly on improving the conditions of ordinary citizens.
Tinubu made the commitment on Friday, August 14, 2026, as pressure continues to mount on the Federal Government to translate its economic reforms into tangible improvements in living standards.
The President’s remarks come against the backdrop of persistent concerns over the cost of food, transportation, employment, insecurity and household purchasing power, despite the administration’s argument that its reforms have helped stabilise Nigeria’s macroeconomic position.
Recent reporting has highlighted the continued pressure on Nigerian households, with food and fuel costs remaining major concerns despite improvements in some economic indicators.
Tinubu’s latest pledge places greater emphasis on the government’s responsibility to address problems that citizens encounter in their daily lives.
Since taking office in May 2023, the President has defended major policy decisions including the removal of the petrol subsidy and reforms to the foreign-exchange market. The administration has argued that those measures were necessary to prevent a deeper fiscal crisis and establish the foundations for sustainable economic growth.
In his third-anniversary address in May, Tinubu acknowledged that the reforms had imposed significant costs on households and businesses.
He said the government was aware of the sacrifices Nigerians had made and maintained that the next phase should ensure that the benefits of economic reforms become more visible in people’s everyday lives.
The President identified several areas requiring continued government attention:

Economic reforms face a crucial test
Tinubu’s renewed commitment comes at a critical point for his administration.
The government has repeatedly pointed to improvements in economic stability as evidence that its reforms are beginning to work. The Federal Ministry of Information, for example, said Nigeria’s economy expanded to ₦441.5 trillion in 2025 and reported a substantial decline in inflation from its earlier peak.
However, improvements in headline economic indicators have not automatically translated into relief for every household.
A recent Reuters report found that Nigerians continue to struggle with high living costs, with the benefits of increased investment and stronger financial-market activity yet to reach many ordinary citizens.
That gap between macroeconomic recovery and household experience represents one of the biggest political and economic challenges facing the Tinubu administration.
For the government, the task is no longer simply to demonstrate that reforms have stabilised public finances or attracted investors. It must also demonstrate that economic recovery can improve wages, purchasing power, employment and access to essential services.
Security remains another major challenge
The President’s pledge also comes as Nigeria continues to confront serious security threats across several regions.
Banditry, kidnapping and insurgency remain major concerns, particularly in northern parts of the country. The Federal Government has responded with increased military operations, additional recruitment and improved welfare packages for security personnel.
Earlier this month, Tinubu approved substantial salary increases for members of the armed forces. The increases, which take effect from September 1, will range from 30 per cent for generals to 80 per cent for lower-ranking personnel.
The measure is intended to strengthen troop welfare and morale as the military confronts multiple security threats.
The government has also continued to emphasise intelligence gathering, surveillance, logistics and improved coordination among security agencies. In his May anniversary statement, Tinubu said security remained central to his administration’s national agenda.
The latest commitment raises expectations that the remaining period of Tinubu’s administration will focus increasingly on converting policy reforms into measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare.
The President has previously argued that difficult decisions were necessary to prevent fiscal deterioration. His administration now faces the equally difficult task of convincing Nigerians that those decisions will ultimately deliver broader prosperity.
That will require more than economic growth figures. Nigerians will likely judge the government by practical outcomes such as:
- The affordability and availability of food.
- The cost and reliability of transportation.
- Access to electricity and other essential services.
- Availability of jobs and opportunities for young people.
- Improved security for communities and businesses.
- Greater purchasing power for households.
