The new Emir of Gumel, Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani, has been appointed by Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, taking over the historic traditional institution just three days after the death of his father, the late Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
The governor approved Lawan Sani’s appointment on Sunday, September 6, 2026, following recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a press briefing in Dutse, the state capital.
Lawan Sani becomes the 17th Emir of Gumel, succeeding his father, who died in Cairo, Egypt, on September 3 after almost 46 years on the throne.
The transition comes at a significant moment for the emirate, with the government moving quickly to fill the vacant stool and maintain continuity within the traditional institution.
The Jigawa government said the appointment followed consultations with the relevant traditional authorities and was made under the provisions of the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.
The selection process involved the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro, as well as the state Council of Chiefs.
The council includes the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, according to reports on the appointment.
The process culminated in Governor Namadi approving Lawan Sani as the next occupant of the Gumel throne.

Before his elevation, Lawan Sani served as Chiroman Gumel, a traditional title that gave him direct experience within the emirate’s leadership structure.
He also has a professional background in Nigeria’s technology sector. Reports identify him as a former Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
His combination of traditional experience and professional background will now shape his role as head of one of Jigawa’s historic emirates.
The state government described him as familiar with the needs and expectations of the people of Gumel, citing his previous service within the emirate.
His appointment also means the Gumel throne remains within the family following the death of the previous monarch.
The new Emir succeeds Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who became the 16th Emir of Gumel after ascending the throne in December 1980.
The late monarch died in Cairo on September 3, 2026, while receiving medical treatment. His death brought an end to one of the longest reigns among traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu described the late emir as a respected traditional ruler whose influence extended beyond the palace into education, peacebuilding and community development.
The former monarch’s nearly five decades on the throne gave him a significant role in the affairs of Gumel and the wider traditional institution in Jigawa State.
The succession therefore comes immediately after the end of a lengthy royal era.
Governor Namadi Seeks Support for New Emir
Governor Namadi congratulated Lawan Sani on his appointment and called on residents and stakeholders across the Gumel Emirate to support the new monarch.
The governor also acknowledged the role played by the emirate’s kingmakers and the state Council of Chiefs in the selection process.
According to the state government, the immediate priority is to ensure a smooth transition and preserve stability within the emirate.
The government is expected to organise a formal presentation of the staff of office to the new emir in due course.
New Chapter for Gumel Emirate
Lawan Sani’s emergence marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Gumel Emirate following the death of a monarch who spent almost half a century on the throne.
His immediate challenge will be to build on the traditional institution’s established role in community leadership while responding to the contemporary needs of the emirate.
For the Jigawa government, the swift appointment also removes uncertainty over the succession and provides the emirate with a new traditional leader following the death of Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
The formal installation and presentation of the staff of office will provide the next major milestone in the transition.
