Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that he is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect votes in the 2027 general election, urging Nigerians to resist intimidation and demand that their ballots count.
Obi made the statement on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during the “Obi Talks Nigeria” town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as he addressed concerns about electoral manipulation and the need for greater citizen participation ahead of the 2027 polls.
The former Anambra State governor told supporters not to be intimidated at polling units, arguing that Nigerians must take an active role in defending the electoral process.
He said the objective was not merely to win an election but to ensure that citizens’ votes are counted and reflected in the final outcome.
Obi’s remarks centred on the need for voters to remain involved throughout the electoral process.
He maintained that political actors should not be allowed to intimidate citizens at polling units, urging Nigerians to participate actively in campaigns and the voting process.
The NDC candidate said his campaign would work towards better coordination among voters and supporters to prevent intimidation during the 2027 election.
According to him, the number of election officials at individual polling units should not make it possible for a small group to overpower a larger number of voters.
Obi’s position reflects a broader argument he has made about citizens taking responsibility for determining Nigeria’s political direction through their votes.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also referenced problems associated with the 2023 presidential election, particularly concerns surrounding the electronic transmission and public viewing of polling-unit results.
INEC introduced the IReV portal to allow members of the public to view uploaded polling-unit result sheets. The commission’s official 2023 election report said the platform was designed to improve transparency and public confidence in the result-management process.
However, the 2023 election generated significant controversy over delays and gaps in the uploading of results to the platform.
Obi and other opposition figures challenged the outcome of the 2023 presidential election in court after President Bola Tinubu was declared the winner. The courts ultimately upheld Tinubu’s victory.
Obi now says the experience should serve as a lesson ahead of 2027.
The NDC presidential candidate warned that attempts could still be made to manipulate the electoral process during the next general election.
However, he expressed confidence that such efforts would face stronger resistance from voters and political participants.
Obi also suggested that reliance on a single technological system could create vulnerabilities if technical problems arise.
He called for adequate contingency arrangements to ensure that network failures or other technical difficulties do not undermine the credibility of election results.

The Port Harcourt meeting forms part of the wider “Obi Talks Nigeria” engagement aimed at taking the NDC’s political message directly to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
Obi’s latest comments place electoral integrity and vote protection at the centre of his campaign message.
Rather than focusing only on his personal ambition, he is calling on supporters to remain active from the campaign period through election day and to ensure that the votes cast at polling units are properly recorded and reflected in the final results.
