Country music icon Dolly Parton was honoured at the 2026 Emmy Awards on Monday night, September 14, with an emotional tribute led by actress Sally Field and country star Reba McEntire in Los Angeles, weeks after Parton’s death at the age of 80.
The tribute at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards celebrated Parton’s decades-long contribution to entertainment, including her work in music, film and television. Field, Parton’s co-star in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias, introduced the segment before McEntire performed Parton’s 1983 song “Appalachian Memories.”
Parton died on August 25, 2026. The Television Academy lists her date of death and records her as an Emmy-winning producer with five nominations and one win.
Field used the Emmy stage to remember her former Steel Magnolias co-star, recalling the warmth, humour and generosity that defined Parton’s public and private reputation.
The actress highlighted Parton’s humanitarian work alongside her entertainment career, underscoring the breadth of her influence beyond country music.
Field and Parton worked together in Steel Magnolias, the acclaimed 1989 film that helped cement Parton’s status as a major Hollywood presence alongside her established music career.
The tribute also reflected the enduring relationships Parton built throughout her career. Her connection with Field and McEntire illustrated how her influence extended beyond professional collaborations into longstanding friendships.
Following Field’s remarks, McEntire performed “Appalachian Memories,” a song Parton wrote and recorded for her 1983 album Burlap & Satin.
McEntire’s performance formed the musical centrepiece of the Dolly Parton tribute at the 2026 Emmys, with images of Parton and Appalachian landscapes displayed during the performance.
The song was particularly fitting for the occasion because of its connection to Parton’s Appalachian roots and the themes that ran through much of her songwriting.
Parton’s career repeatedly drew on her upbringing in Tennessee, helping establish a distinctive artistic identity that connected her personal story with audiences around the world.
Although best known globally as a singer and songwriter, Parton also maintained a substantial television career as a performer and producer.

- A role in the production company Sandollar Productions, which was involved in television projects including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel
Her influence also extended to philanthropy. The Television Academy says Parton’s Imagination Library had distributed more than 332 million books to children worldwide.
The Dolly Parton tribute formed part of a broader evening of remembrance at the 2026 Emmy Awards.
The ceremony also honoured other major figures from entertainment who died during the preceding year. Catherine O’Hara received a tribute from her Schitt’s Creek co-stars, while Jamie Lee Curtis remembered director and actor Rob Reiner and director James Burrows.
The main In Memoriam segment featured Noah Kahan performing “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” adding another musical element to a ceremony that balanced celebration with remembrance.
Hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the 78th Emmy Awards were broadcast from the Peacock Theater at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles.
The 2026 Emmy tribute reinforced the unusually broad reach of Parton’s career.
From country music and Hollywood films to television production and children’s literacy, Parton developed an influence that crossed entertainment categories and generations. Her Emmy recognition was only one part of a career that also included induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and a record 26 No. 1 songs on the Billboard country chart for a female artist, according to the Television Academy.
