The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested and brought back to Nigeria Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, more than two years after he allegedly fled the country following the seizure of 49.70kg of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The 52-year-old suspect was arrested at an airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on September 2, 2026, following intelligence received by the NDLEA. He was subsequently handed over to Nigerian operatives on September 4 through cooperation between INTERPOL offices in Nigeria and Benin.
Ibewuike was among suspects declared wanted after the NDLEA intercepted the heroin shipment during a coordinated operation at the Lagos airport cargo terminal in February 2024.
According to the agency, the consignment was concealed inside cartons of metal-cutting machines and represented the largest single heroin seizure recorded at the airport.
His return to Nigeria brings a major development to a case that has already produced convictions, ongoing trials and financial investigations into the suspected trafficking network.
The NDLEA said Ibewuike left Nigeria after the 2024 heroin seizure and relocated to Mozambique, where he allegedly operated a hotel business as a cover.
The agency said he subsequently moved between Mozambique, Nigeria and neighbouring Benin Republic while attempting to remain beyond the reach of Nigerian authorities.
His movements eventually drew the attention of investigators after the NDLEA obtained actionable intelligence about his whereabouts.
The intelligence led to his arrest at the Cotonou airport on September 2.

Following his return, Ibewuike underwent preliminary questioning by NDLEA investigators.
The agency said he confirmed his identity and disclosed that he had changed his name from Chidibest Ibewuike to Festus Ibewuike.
On September 5, investigators took him to the NDLEA Central Exhibit Store in Ikoyi, Lagos, where the agency said he identified heroin parcels bearing the code “ND”.
The agency said the markings on the parcels had been established as being connected to him.
The development could become significant to the prosecution as investigators continue to establish the suspect’s alleged role in the trafficking operation.
However, allegations contained in an investigation remain subject to determination by the court.
The original investigation began in February 2024 when NDLEA operatives at MMIA uncovered heroin hidden inside cartons of metal-cutting machines.
The seizure followed a 12-day operation by the agency’s MMIA Strategic Command.
Ibewuike was subsequently listed among three suspects who were charged in absentia after authorities could not apprehend them.
The investigation also extended to people allegedly connected to the trafficking network.
According to the NDLEA, authorities froze 107 bank accounts and pursued the forfeiture of properties allegedly linked to the suspected cartel.
The agency also arrested Ibewuike’s wife, Confidence Ndidiamaka Ibewuike, whom it accused of receiving drug-laden parcels on his behalf.
The case was filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos under charge number FHC/L/205C/2024.
The arrest of Ibewuike adds another development to a prosecution that has already produced convictions.
The NDLEA said three defendants have so far been convicted and sentenced in connection with the case:
- Adinnu Felix Chinedu
- Osita Emmanuel Obinna
- Uzochukwu Frankline
Three other defendants remain on trial, according to the agency:
- Chidiebere Reginald Peter
- Ibewuike Ndidiamaka Confidence
- Igbokwuputa Onyinye Ireene
Ibewuike, Osita Chidozie Cyril and another suspect identified as Arinze were charged in absentia.
Ibewuike’s arrest therefore allows Nigerian authorities to bring one of the previously absent defendants back into the proceedings.
His eventual appearance before the court will determine the next stage of the case against him.
The agency said its investigation also uncovered a previous drug-related case involving Ibewuike.
According to the NDLEA, he had earlier been associated with a Federal High Court case involving the seizure of 40.255kg of methamphetamine.
That case was heard in Lagos under charge number FHC/L/203C/2013.
The latest development means investigators are examining not only the 2024 heroin seizure but also the suspect’s reported history in previous narcotics investigations.
Any additional prosecution arising from that earlier case would depend on the relevant court records and evidence presented by investigators.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said Ibewuike’s arrest demonstrated that suspects who flee Nigeria can still be traced.
Marwa credited the cooperation between the NDLEA and INTERPOL offices in Nigeria and Benin with helping secure the suspect’s return.
The NDLEA chairman also warned other suspects who remain outside the country that the agency would continue pursuing them.
The development reflects a broader emphasis by the anti-narcotics agency on international cooperation and intelligence-sharing in tackling drug trafficking networks that operate across national borders.
The arrest does not itself establish guilt. Ibewuike remains entitled to due process, and the prosecution must prove its case before the court.
What the development does achieve is the removal of one of the major fugitives from the 2024 heroin investigation.
The case also illustrates the increasing importance of cooperation between Nigerian authorities and law-enforcement agencies in other countries when suspected traffickers attempt to evade prosecution by crossing borders.
For the NDLEA, the successful repatriation of Ibewuike strengthens its ongoing effort to bring fugitives connected to major drug seizures before the courts.
The next major step will be for the suspect to face the pending legal process in Nigeria over his alleged role in the 49.70kg heroin trafficking operation.
