On Saturday, August 22, a separate fire destroyed nine locked-up shops at the Nigerian Railway Shopping Complex along the Aleshinloye Market axis in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
The Oyo State Fire Services responded to that incident after receiving an emergency call early in the morning. A trader affected by the blaze estimated the value of goods and equipment destroyed in his shop at about ₦21 million.
The proximity of the two incidents has increased concerns about fire safety in Ibadan’s commercial districts, particularly as traders continue to recover from previous outbreaks.
However, the two incidents should not be treated as having the same cause. Preliminary findings in the Aleshinloye incident reportedly pointed to a possible electrical surge, while authorities have not established the cause of the Oranyan Market fire.
