Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has challenged those accusing him of having links to bandits to produce credible evidence, as renewed allegations against the lawmaker generate controversy ahead of the 2027 elections.
Buba, who is the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, said anyone with evidence of criminal involvement should submit it to security agencies or the courts rather than rely on social media allegations and viral videos.
The senator’s response follows renewed claims that he has maintained relationships with suspected bandits. Some of the allegations have been amplified through videos circulated online by a content creator identified as D English Alhaji.
Buba has rejected the claims and described the campaign against him as politically motivated. He said the materials being presented as evidence of bandit connections do not establish wrongdoing on his part.
The dispute has revived questions about the distinction between legitimate scrutiny of public officials and unverified claims involving national security.
A central part of the controversy concerns videos purportedly showing suspected bandit leaders visiting Buba’s residence.
The senator said the footage was misleading because it combined unrelated recordings made at different times and involving different people.
According to Buba, one of the clips showed Kaduna-based Hajj returnees who visited his residence in 2023, while another featured separate individuals displaying passports. He said the people shown in the respective recordings also spoke different languages, which he cited as evidence that the videos had been stitched together to create a false narrative.
An investigation cited by recent reports also raised questions about the interpretation of the footage. The available reporting indicates that the viral material does not, by itself, establish that bandit kingpins visited Buba’s home.
The latest controversy goes beyond the viral videos.
A man identified as Hassan has accused Buba of being among politicians allegedly assisting bandits in northern Nigeria. Hassan also alleged that people connected to notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide were taken to Abuja for specialised training, purportedly with assistance from one of Buba’s aides. Buba has denied the allegations.
Because these claims involve alleged criminal conduct, they require independent verification rather than acceptance based solely on interviews, social-media posts or anonymous assertions.
Buba has characterised the accusations as part of a sustained effort to damage his reputation as he prepares to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi.
The senator previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, a position that placed him in contact with sensitive security issues. He has argued that some interactions and security-related contacts have subsequently been taken out of context.
He also said his decision to respond publicly was influenced by the continued circulation of the allegations and the potential damage to his reputation.
Buba’s position is straightforward: if anyone has evidence of criminal conduct, the evidence should be taken to the appropriate authorities.
He has urged his supporters not to respond to the accusations with confrontation or unverified counterclaims, stressing the need for restraint and lawful action.
The allegations are not entirely new.
Buba has faced claims concerning alleged relationships with suspected bandits since 2024. Earlier reports linked the senator to an allegation involving the sponsorship of a suspected bandit for the 2024 Hajj.
At the time, reports said security authorities were examining the allegation. Buba has consistently rejected claims that he sponsored or assisted bandits.
The senator has also previously taken legal and law-enforcement steps over allegations he considers defamatory.
In September 2025, Buba said he petitioned the Nigeria Police Force over individuals he accused of spreading defamatory material and making demands for money. He said arrests and court proceedings followed, although those proceedings concern allegations against the individuals involved and should not be treated as proof of either Buba’s guilt or innocence regarding the separate banditry claims.
Key Issues Still Requiring Verification
The controversy leaves several questions that security agencies and, where appropriate, the courts would need to resolve:
- Whether any of the individuals shown in circulated videos have links to bandit groups.
- Whether the original videos were altered or combined misleadingly.
- Whether any aide to Buba facilitated criminal activity.
- Whether the allegations made by Hassan can be independently substantiated.
- Whether any security agency has established evidence linking Buba personally to banditry.
These questions should be distinguished from claims that have already been challenged or shown to rely on misleading material.
The dispute comes at a politically sensitive period in Bauchi, with Buba positioning himself as a PRP challenger in the 2027 governorship race.
Security remains one of the most politically consequential issues in northern Nigeria, making allegations of links between politicians and armed groups particularly serious.
For Buba, the controversy represents both a reputational and political challenge. For his accusers, however, the allegations require evidence capable of standing up to scrutiny.
The senator has therefore placed the burden directly on those making the accusations, asking them to move beyond social-media claims and submit verifiable evidence to investigators or the courts.
The Shehu Buba controversy illustrates the risks of using viral content as proof of criminal conduct.
While public officials should remain open to scrutiny, accusations involving banditry, terrorism or other serious crimes require a much higher evidentiary standard than the circulation of photographs or edited videos.
Available reporting indicates that Buba denies the allegations and disputes the authenticity or interpretation of some of the material being circulated. At the same time, some separate allegations remain claims that require independent investigation rather than political conclusions.
The next significant development will therefore be whether the accusers or relevant authorities can produce independently verifiable evidence capable of confirming or disproving the allegations.
Until then, the claims against Shehu Buba should be reported as allegations, not established facts.
