South African police have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of former two-time world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete, who was shot outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The arrests mark a significant development in the investigation into the death of the 38-year-old boxer, who was ambushed as he arrived at his residence. A 27-year-old woman travelling with him was also wounded during the shooting and remains in hospital.
Eastern Cape police said one of the suspects has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder. The attempted murder charge relates to the female passenger who survived the attack.
The latest arrests came after police initially detained two people on Saturday before making additional arrests on Sunday. One person who had initially been apprehended was later released and is being treated as a potential witness.

Tete was attacked while entering the driveway of his home in NU17, Mdantsane. Police said two armed men wearing balaclavas approached the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing.
Tete died at the scene, while the woman accompanying him suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Eastern Cape police, the first arrest was made on Saturday, August 22, in KuGompo City. Three further arrests followed the next day, with one suspect apprehended in Mdantsane and two in Scenery Park.
The suspects currently in custody include three people aged 27, 27 and 28, along with the suspect who was arrested during the initial police operation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed evidence linking each individual to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Zolani Tete was one of South Africa’s most accomplished boxers and became a two-division world champion during a career that took him to major boxing venues around the world.
He won the IBF junior-bantamweight world championship in 2014 before capturing the WBO bantamweight title in 2017.
Tete also secured a place in boxing history in 2017 when he stopped fellow South African Siboniso Gonya with his first punch after just 11 seconds. The victory became the fastest knockout recorded in a world championship bout.
His career included major international appearances and victories that established him as one of the leading boxers produced by South Africa.
His death therefore represents not only a major loss for his family but also a significant blow to the country’s boxing community.
At the time of his death, Tete was preparing to resume his professional career.
His return followed the conclusion of a four-year ban imposed by the UK Anti-Doping Agency in 2023. The ban expired on July 29, 2026, and Tete had been training with plans to return to competition.
South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie described Tete as one of the country’s finest fighters and said he had believed he still had more to contribute to South African boxing.
That planned comeback has added another dimension to the shock surrounding his death. Tete had been attempting to begin another chapter of his sporting career when the fatal attack ended his plans.
